Employment Type Regular Full Time

 About the Position

As a Software Engineer on the DNSWatch team, you will help design, develop, and operate DNSWatch, our DNS-based security service that protects businesses from phishing, ransomware, and common threats, as well as future product offerings that extend DNSWatch protection beyond the corporate network. As a team we value mastering our craft, learning from each other, and building the highest quality solutions to challenging technical problems. DNSWatch leverages a variety of technologies and languages, but is primarily built using Python and Django, with our global DNS being built upon PowerDNS. All services are operated in Amazon Web Services. Configuration is managed using Salt, and our services are orchestrated with Fabric. The DNSWatch team is located in Lynnfield, MA.

Position Responsibilities:

Your first week

  • Following a warm welcome, you’ll get your development environment up and running, which leverages Vagrant, Salt, and Fabric for quick and easy provisioning with a simple interface. Of course, we encourage improvements to the process as you see fit.
  • We’ll help you pick a bug or feature to work on; one that will specifically help build familiarity with the services and technologies that comprise DNSWatch.
  •  You’ll open a pull request (which will include tests!), participate in code review and discussion, address feedback, and land your first of many commits to production.
  • Finally, you’ll deploy your fix or feature with a colleague! Again, process and tooling improvements always welcome!

Your first month

  • Building on your first week, you will continue to build new features, address issues, and help improve the overall user experience and service offering provided by DNSWatch.
  • You will engage with product management and customer support in order to understand customer feedback and needs.
  • You will help measure performance and reliability of the services that comprise DNSWatch.
  • You will review other people’s code and pull requests.

Your first year

  • You will help shape the future of DNSWatch services by influencing the technical direction of all our products.
  • You will continue to be mentored by the team, as well as help mentor more junior staff.
  • You will be exposed to a wide variety of technologies and problems, ranging from helping scale a global DNS resolver, securing a web-based application, helping analyze a new malware family, and everything in between.
  • You will be a part of a new product launch.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Proficiency with the Python programming language
  • Experience with modern web frameworks, such as Django or Rails
  • Care about working on solving important problems, especially those related to security
  • Enjoy working in a collaborative environment, value mentorship, and mentoring others
  • Have experience or interest in learning the technologies mentioned above

  • B.S. in Computer Science or related Engineering degree
  • 1-5 years of experience working in comparable position preferred
  • Some experience with modern cloud platforms, such as AWS or Google Cloud preferred
