Software Engineer Summer Intern

Engineering - DNS – Lynnfield, Massachusetts
Department Engineering - DNS
Employment Type Intern
Minimum Experience Entry-level

About the Position

As a Software Engineer Intern on the DNSWatch team, you will help design, develop, and operate DNSWatch. Our DNS-based security service protects businesses from phishing, ransomware, and common threats, as well as future product offerings that extend DNSWatch protection beyond the corporate network.

The Team

As a team we value mastering our craft, learning from each other, and building the highest quality solutions to challenging technical problems. DNSWatch leverages a variety of technologies and languages, but is primarily built using Python and Django, with our global DNS being built upon PowerDNS. All services are operated in Amazon Web Services. Configuration is managed using Salt, and our services are orchestrated with Fabric. The DNSWatch team is located in Wakefield, MA.

 About You

We are looking for candidates that:

  • Care about working on solving important problems, especially those related to security.
  • Enjoy working in a collaborative environment, value being mentored, and mentoring others.
  • Have experience or interest in learning the technologies mentioned above.

Position Responsibilities

Your first week...

  • Following a warm welcome, you’ll get your development environment up and running, which leverages Vagrant, Salt, and Fabric for quick and easy provisioning with a simple interface. Of course, you’re welcome to improve the process as you see fit.
  • You’ll pick a bug or feature to work on; one that will specifically help build familiarity with the services and technologies that comprise DNSWatch.
  • You’ll open a pull request (which will include tests!), participate in code review and discussion, address feedback, and land your first of many commits to production.
  • Finally, you’ll deploy your fix or feature with a colleague! Again, process and tooling improvements always welcome!

The rest of the summer...

  • Building on your first week, you will continue to build new features, address issues, and help improve the overall user experience and service offering provided by DNSWatch.
  • You will engage with customers in order to understand their feedback and needs.
  • You will help design, develop, and implement new features in DNSWatch, participating in each stage of the process.
  • You will review other people’s code and pull requests.
  • You will be exposed to a wide variety of technologies and problems, ranging from helping scale a global DNS resolver, securing a web-based application, helping analyze a new malware family, and everything in between.
  • You will be a part of extending DNSWatch’s protection off of the corporate network, protecting each employee’s endpoint device regardless of location.

Experience:

  • Recently graduated or currently pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science or related Engineering degree
  • Some familiarity with modern cloud platforms, such as AWS, Google Cloud, or similar platform
